Since 1824, the charity’s dedicated volunteers have saved over 146,000 lives, making it an essential lifeline for those in danger on the water.
For Haraldur Agustsson, founder of The Skipasund Foundation, the RNLI holds a special place in his heart, therefore Skipasund were proud to support the incredible work of Lerwick Lifeboat crew with a generous donation.
Haraldur Agustsson said: “We’re proud to support the incredible work of Lerwick Lifeboat crew and we hope this new equipment helps them to save lives at sea.”
The crew gratefully accepted thermal imaging binoculars as a donation to ease their night-time search and rescue. The binoculars feature a high-resolution thermal sensor that can detect heat sources up to 2km away in complete darkness, ideal for searches overnight and during winter months. As well as being waterproof, the binoculars also have a laser rangefinder which is accurate up to 1,000 meters, and a built-in photo and video recorder with the ability to transfer images to other devices.
The donation was personally handed over by Haraldur’s son, Ingvar Haraldsson, to the crew. Lerwick Lifeboat's coxswain, Stephen Manson, expressed deep gratitude, noting the significant impact the binoculars will have.
“At night, it’s especially hard to spot anyone in the water or along the coastline, especially if they’re not wearing anything reflective,” Stephen Manson explained. “These thermal images will save us valuable time during searches, allowing us to reach casualties faster.”
The Skipasund Foundation are hopeful this donation will help the RNLI continue their vital work of saving lives at seas.
